The unnamed companion on the road: spiritual accompaniment in the context of youth ministry
Publication:
Selvam, S.G. (2013), The unnamed companion on the road: Spiritual accompaniment in the context of youth ministry. The Journal of Youth Ministry, 11(4), 41-55.
Abstract
In this article, I would like to explore a model of spiritual accompaniment and to examine its possible use in accompanying young people on their spiritual journey. The model invites the practitioner to be the unnamed companion on the road to Emmaus. The theoretical framework for the model is drawn from various Christian traditions of spiritual accompaniment, particularly the Ignatian tradition. The Ignatian tradition originates from the spirituality of the Spanish Saint, Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556), who founded the largest religious order within the Catholic Church: the Jesuits (Idígoras-Tellechea, 1994). The Saint himself provides some implicit guidelines for the process of spiritual accompaniment in the context of what is called, “The Spiritual Exercises” (Fleming, 1996). Despite its Roman […]
Homily for the feast of St Maria Dominica Mazzarello
“Every stitch an act of Love for God”
I am really nervous about this homily: an SDB with meagre knowledge of Mary Mazzarello (MM) preaching to a group of FMA! Hence the written text! I asked at least three sisters to do this homily, all refused; so here I am.
One way of escaping this predicament of my ignorance about MM is to say something very generic, as one SDB suggested. But thanks to Sr Virginia, FMA, who gave me a cart-load of books, I shall say something related to MM. So be prepared also for a lengthy homily – giving me time to show that I have tried to read the “cart-load of books”!
If I were to be preaching to a group of SDB, I could be an expert on MM if I were to say to them: MM was […]

The retreat took place at the provincial house in Lusaka. The retreat facilitator, Fr. Selvam, PhD in Psychology of Religion, shared wonderful thoughts on ministry, mission and the personal experience with Jesus Christ. He insisted on the need of a personal encounter with Jesus as the basis of any ministry. Fr. Selvam also presented some dynamics which -if overlooked- normally threaten any ministry.
The seven-step-retreat presented by Fr. Selvam helped the participants to get in touch with themselves and reality. In some of his talks, the facilitators emphasized the idea of moving towards a closer relationship with God in Jesus […]
Sermon for 4th Sunday in Eastertide – Cycle C Homily
4th Sunday of Easter – Year C
I am known to the Shepherd (Jn 10:27-30)
With the increasing urban life, young people of today might think, oranges are just churned out of factories. The only fruits that they may be familiar with are: Apple products, Black-berries and Orange-mobile phone! And with new techniques of farming and animal husbandry, the image of the shepherd may become a by-gone figure.
Today, the 4th Sunday of Easter is celebrated as the Good Shepherd Sunday. We think of the ‘pastoral’ love of God, as we also pray for vocations to priesthood; priests are the ‘pastors’ of the church. Each year, for the gospel reading, we hear one part of John 10. This year, being Year C, we listen to the third part of that chapter. Today, Jesus says, “I know them and they know me; […]
