The aim of the study is to explore the trajectories and dynamics of young adults (18 to 35 year olds) who were baptised in a church, but have abandoned their Christian faith in favour of a non-religious spirituality or secularisation; they might believe in God or not. The study targets participants who were born or brought up in Nairobi, and who may be currently living elsewhere in the country or outside.
It has been approved by NACOSTI/P/22/15551. The study involves no known risk to participants and contains no deception. It takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes to take part in the INTERVIEW. This is one of the flagship programmes of Don Bosco Youth Educational Services, Nairobi. The programme is a brain-child of Sahaya G. Selvam, sdb.
We have trained 184 teachers in Kenya and Tanzania – in 7 workshops.
Recently (5-7 January 2021), we trained some of the teachers of Kiambu Loreto Girls High School. Thanks to the enthusiasm of Mr Paul Kioi, the chair of the School Board the we were able to reach out to the school.

“Train the Trainer in Youth Ministry” has been one of the flagship programmes of Don Bosco Youth Educational Services (DBYES, Nairobi) right from its beginning, in the year 2000. Frs Glenford Lowe, Tom Kunnel, Sebastian Kodalyil, and Joe Prabhu, supported by Fr Tony Fernandes, launched this programme, and replicated it in different ways across East Africa. Fr Sahaya G. Selvam, who learnt at the feet of these great giants of Salesian Youth Ministry in Eastern Africa, consolidated this initiative in the Scaffoldings Programme: Training Youth in Christian Life Skills. The manual of which was published by Paulines Africa in 2008.

This reflection has a simple thesis: the secret of affective maturity consists in the ability to maintain an equilibrium of inner energy level. One might call this inner state: serenity, peace, and equanimity; however, it is not a passive serenity but an energised vitality. Using insights from contemporary psychology and the classical Christian spirituality, I will explore the dynamics of our inner energy. I will point out the relationship between spirituality and stable energy levels, and the adverse impact of energy-swings on spirituality and affective maturity.
